Invest for Eternity

What follows us beyond the grave?
Only character and relationships!! Why dont we invest in these???

Read this, Hear this, repeat this: Death is inevitable. We are going to die. Every moment that we live draws us closer to death. Possibly, this is the most unwelcome and frightening truth we will ever hear. But on the other hand, it is the most shocking reality check we could have. This thought will constantly make us evaluate our priorities, goals and objectives in life. All the wants and desires that we spend a lifetime chasing such as money, fame, power, possessions, are impermanent(short lived). No matter how much we may love our expensive Cars, holiday homes in the country or bank balance, we must one day leave them and let go.

When people discern this, they try and compensate by leaving behind legacies – children, lasting achievements, immortal works of art. All these are marvelous, but they are based on the belief that we will live only once and therefore achievements are our only shot at immortality.

However, we know better today. We know that we are immortal where it really matters. At the soul level. The body decays and disintegrates, but the soul lives on.

As immortal souls how do we live? What should be our goals? Our conduct?

To begin with, we need to see what we take with us. According to all the spiritual texts, all faiths and near-death experiences, there are only two things that survive death. One is our character, the sum total of our experiences on earth. The other is our relationships.  At the end of our life, who we become, is the raw material for the journey beyond death.

If we have lived angry, cynical and negative lives, if we have lived a life of reactivity and negativity, we take all of these with us. But, if we have used this lifetime to grow in every conceivable way, if we have sought to be gentle, loving, considerate, efficient, able and giving, then all that too will go with us.

Since others are also immortal, we also take our relationships onward into the next soul journey. This means that we need to prioritize growth and relationships. We need to see life as a vast school where we take birth  in order to grow in perfection until we attain enlightenment. Every experience must be used as a growth opportunity, something to help us grow in whatever quality we lack. Every conflict, problem, shortfall is to be seen only as indication that we have not got there as yet. Even the tiniest of resistance to the weather, or the tardy progress of the traffic or to one’s scratchy new clothes are signs that we have still some way to grow.

Finally, we need to truly work on our relationships, especially with those closest to us – our primary family and the one we marry into, close relatives and friends. Many of us have issues with our family and quite often get estranged, but from the point of view of your soul, alienation is not an option. All it means is that we are doomed to spend a few more years with them until we finally resolve our differences and strike harmony. So, we might as well start working on them today itself. If we can view each relationship as an opportunity for growth, instead of a source of misery, we will have the motivation to do so. Relationships teach us more about ourselves than almost any aspect of life. We become aware of the many games we play in order to get people to do what we want. And to discover our own manipulative ways can be an eye-opener.
It is only while relating to others that we discover our blind or soft spots. We discover that we like to dominate, we do not know how to safeguard our space, we are not really comfortable around people, find it hard to open up to the opposite sex, have an authority issue, are impatient with slow learners, judge and criticize everything that we disagree with and so on. Only through ongoing introspection and interaction can we change the way we relate.

The decision is now upto you. You decide where you would like to invest your time, energy and money – the joys that last a lifetime or the joys that are for eternity.

What will your decision be? Decide carefully, or you will spend your lifetime wasted for eternity.

with love Zeenat

  1. Hi Zeenat. I have realised that investing my time in the people I love most will be the best investment of my life. Thanks for saying this, a lot of people need to hear it.

    • Hi Steven,
I am glad you have found the right investment…:)
And youre right..the more people realize this…more enriching their life will truly become…and their souls will indeed become happily immortal.

  2. Interesting topic today. Angry, cynical, and negative lives; I think that is what hell is.

So important to invest our time in people, in finding and using our gifts, finding harmony and fearlessly spending time in the spiritual part of our existence. Nice work.

I think what we do in love and kindness is all we ever leave behind.

    • Hi Erin,
Youre so so right! Whatever we do with negative feelings will just finish and vanish right here…but acts of love and kindness will certainly go with us and live forever.
Thank you for your beautiful comment here :)
      Much Love~

  6. I enjoyed reading this post today, Zeenat, because Death is often a constant presence in my mind … but not in a morbid way. :) With my awareness of its presence, I am more apt to live each day more fully … and more fully aware of the uniqueness of it: this particular day will only happen once.

It has been much easier since my move to Greece to let go of “stuff.” Part of this started before I left when I actually had to distill my life down into three suitcases, but a lot of it has occurred here, where my husband and I simply aren’t trapped by or slaves to our possessions (which are few) and find much more joy in the gift of time that our life in Greece gives us. A good day for us is a walk out in the sun, coffee at a cafe by the sea, and hours of conversation with good friends over a shared meal.

Thank you for a thoughtful, positive post.

    • HI Carla,
Am Glad you enjoyed this post..and happier that you have truly found what the perfect investment fro your eternal being will be. How wonderful to have a life packed in 3 suitcases. I love simple living..and much like you have few possessions. My favorite possession as of now is my family..and i wouldnt trade it for a thing….how great is it..that these very relationships truly do make for great eternal bliss!
Thank you fro your beautiful comment here :)
      Much love~

  7. That’s the greatest thought I’ve heard. Thanks for sharing this with us!

I just have to repeat it – What follows us beyond the grave? Only character and relationships!! Why don’t we invest in these…

  8. Hi Z! Only a beautiful, compassionate soul could write a post like this – that would be YOU of course! Lovely, Z! I couldn’t agree with you more!
    hugs
    suZen

    • Hi Suzen,
Only you can shower me with such beautiful words :) Me blushing…
Glad you enjoyed this and agree with me….I wouldn’t want to be in eternity without you :)
      Much love~

  9. Hi Zeenat .. that is wonderful .. and as you say why don’t we invest in character and relationships .. we really should & I hope everyone that comes here will spread the word that we have a choice to make that investment. Death is definitely inevitable .. the challenge is – we have no idea when .. long may our lives last and we can make that investment .. brilliant – thank you so much .. Hilary

    • Hi HIlary,
      Long may we live..Amen.
But live like there was no tomorrow…and see how much more you will accomplish in this very day :) The right kind of investments will just pour out of you.
Thank you fro your wonderful comment here Hilary. Love it!
      Much love ~

  10. Beautiful Zeenat! This is so, so true and feels very right for where I am in life right now. What matters most to me is not what I accomplish from a “stuff” perspective, or even fame, but how much love and joy I can spread throughout my little corner of the world. My heart constantly tells me what’s important — and when I die, I pray my soul showers the world with a beautiful mist of love that lasts eternally. For now, though, I’ll spread love and joy one small action at a time.

Huge hug & gratitude to you, my wonderful friend!

    • HI My Joyful Angel,
Beautiful mist of love…wow! I do hope we all have the power to leave that love behind…which in turn is truly the best investment for an eternity. What fun it will be to be In Eternity with you :)
One small act of love at a time ….
Bug hug and lots of love to my gliding angel :)

  11. Dear Zeenat,

So true what you have brought to our attention.
The only thing is, we need more people to practice this.
The law of investing, most important things what life offers?
Great article – Thank you, Zuzanna

    • HI Zuzanna,
Practice does make perfect. Once we realize the importance of investing from our souls perspective, we can never go wrong. Practice is the first step….
And Amen to your thought of everyone practicing this kind of investment.
Glad you liked this article. Thank you fro sharing your beautiful thoughts here.
      Much love~

  12. “Relationships teach us more about ourselves than almost any aspect of life. ” – Zeenat, thank you I need to remember this. Actually, I’ll be moving closer to a loved one soon, so I really am taking this one to heart!

    • Hi Adam,
I am glad This article could be a positive reminder to you. And congrats on moving closer to your loved one. I am sure youre moving in the perfect eternal direction :)
Thank you fro sharing your lovely thoughts here :)

  13. While I agree with much of what you have written here I see beyond it now. I believe the purpose of life is to make one important decision. Will we surrender our selfishness for the greater good or not.

There are two things that are necessary for heaven to be heaven:

    1) Free choice. If we have no free choice we are nothing more than machines, pawns or slaves to another

    2) Peace. There can be no peace if there is ONE selfish soul in heaven. That one would ruin it for us all.

What a brilliant plan there is for us to finally live in peace and love among only those who are willing to live guided by a Creator knowing the Creator is the only entity capable of truly knowing what is best for us all.

When we believe that we have both free choice and a loving community and that is my definition of heaven.

    • Hi Gail,
What a wonderful definition of heaven you have ! WOW! I agree with you….that selfishness cannot be the right kind of investment for an eternity. If we want our souls to live in Gods ultimate Heaven…..invest in love and relationships….the path will be clear then.
Thank you for your lovely comment :)
      Much love~

  14. Hi Zeenat,

It is obvious that you wrote this post with all of your heart and soul. It is truly beautiful. :)

Being a human being is such a great gift and being alive is a blessing too. We get out of life as much as we put into it. Life is not about things but rather an affair of the heart and soul. We are here to grow, give and love. We are also here to make the world a better place. We all have a purpose and we all have a life that is meaningful. It is up to us to decide how to use this gift for the greater good and not get consumed with things that truly do not matter.

I think this is the kind of investing we all need to know more about!

Hugs and blessings to you! :)

    • Hi Nadia,
You say it so beautifully…an affair of the heart and soul is exactly what life is supposed to be…and in all honesty is the best eternal investment.
Finding your purpose can certainly be the best feeling in the world..and the good that can come from this purpose can certainly be right kind of investment.
Hugs and blessings to you too :)

  15. Z.
This is good to read as I’ve already had 2 shortfalls and it’s only 9:20. LOL And the tag on my shirt is itching like crazy and before we die can you visit my home in the country…I would love to have you…

Seriously you are spot on and I think Mother Teresa said it all when she said, “The only thing we take with us when we die is the love we left behind.” xo

    • Hi Tess,
I am gonna for sure visit you and all our blogging pals in the future for sure. But in-case I dont before i die i.e. be prepared for the spirit of Me in your corridors ;)
But youre right….love in all we do and all around us is surely the most perfect eternal investment.
      xoxo :)

  17. ya its the thing that we have to think about that involving every type of occasion happening in our family to get the emotional touch from every one.

  18. Kudoz to that, Zeenat

The most important thing about us, humans, is exactly our death: the ultimate evaluation of what we learned, of how high we grew and of how much impact we had on this part of the Universe. And you said it perfectly: it’s our sum of experiences and the interactions that survives our short intermezzo. The rest is impermanent, an illusion.

    • HI Dragos,
The illusion is inevitably the thing we seem to run after in this life…thats such a waste. The only permanent things are relationships and love…and not investing it them in this part of our life can make us pretty bitter after the ultimate lap of our life.
Glad you liked this Dragos :)

  19. Zeenat,

A wonderfully straight forward and simple approach to looking at our after life. I found it truly inspiring. I have already received some inspiration from the church service today and your post has added to it.

Many people fear the end of their material life, whilst it is a time of celebration. A celebration of their life. The greater times are yet to come.

Thank you for sharing such wonderful words.

    Regards

    Paul

    • HI Paul,
A celebration is exactly what this life should be! A celebration of the gift of life…and the umpteen gift God has given us….
Am glad you found this article inspiring .
Thank you for your lovely comment :)

  20. Hi Zeenat,
I’ve come to the same conclusion about relationships over the last few years with my children. I was great with them when they were young but we had to figure out a new relationship when they got to be teenagers. I’m happy to say it worked!! My children have taught me much about myself and life. They indirectly helped me to achieve my childhood dream of being a writer.

I’m glad I found your blog and I’m looking forward to reading through it.

    • HI Betsy,
Its so amazing how our kids are teaching such new avenues of ourself…My little one is only 3 and she has taught me so many things already…everyday is a new amazing adventure!
I know my mum says that to me…that we kids i.e. me and my brothers have taught her so much. I would always wonder what she meant, up until I had my own little girl to teach me :)
Love and these very awesome relationships..indeed are the best investment for our soul :)
Thank you for stopping by and sharing your wonderful thoughts. I always love to see and connect with a new reader…More soul connections.
      Much Love~

  21. Hi,

It is the marvelous write up and one of the best I read so far… many many Congratulation for this….
Do you belives in socond life….means life death and then new life then again death and so on…?Please answer…
Sorry to ask…is it written by you?

On one side you type this ” find it hard to open up to the opposite sex” on other side “Calling All Ladies Who Blog In Hyderabad…” …..Looking for your word on it………..

    • HI Manish,
I believe in life! And I believe in an unending immortal life of the soul. The physical doesnt matter to me as much, cause my focus and clarity and my own peace comes from the belief that this soul is immortal and has many many journeys to go…
Yes, this is my blog and hence the article is written by me :) Glad you liked it.
As fro the line-” find it hard to open up to the opposite sex”…it was in context to trying to introspect and understand more of our self and our surroundings in order to invest in the right things in this lifetime, so that our life after this physical plane of existence ends….can be a good one.
And “calling all ladies who blog in hyderabad” was a forum discussion i started on indiblogger, cause being a woman i wanted to know if there are other ladies who are also attending the event.
The two statements are not connected to each other at all.
Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to read and comment :)

  23. Hey Zeenat,

While I was in India I thought that on two separate occasions that my mum was going to die. That thought didn’t scare me. I’ve been around death enough to realise there is beauty in it. I even hoped she would have a peaceful death. That was not in a cruel sense, it was in the sense of compassion. Anyone whose lost very close loved ones will know exactly what I mean.

We all die and it’s not a question of if, just when. (and maybe how) but the import part and key thing is how am I choosing to live right now?

I love the title of this post, invest in eternity…you could call your next book that! :-) x

  24. It’s appropriate to read this article since now is the period of Qing Ming, which is the period when we Chinese pray to dead ancestors.
Most of us do not reflect on life and death except during this period, since we have to confront our dead ancestors.

  25. Hi Zeenat!
I really liked your post on investing for eternity. What really matters is immortal soul life not the carnal life. The body is mortal but soul life is immortal. The 21st generation is running after mortal things but mankind has to concentrate on the immortal life.
