Recently, while I was switching channels looking for the CBeeBies BBC channel for my little one, I came across this tune/song I Only Ask Of God by a group Outlandish on one of the channels.
Immediately, just as soon as I heard just the first line, it brought tears to my eyes. I had only recently written a small post Sometimes I Wonder… These lyrics somehow took me back to that state of mind all over again.
I have put the youtube video below the lyrics as well. Read the lyrics and see the video and decide for yourself. seeing the video gives the words more impact.
I Only ask Of God:
I only ask of God
He won’t let me be indifferent to the suffering
That the very dried up death doesn’t find me
Empty and without having given my everything
I only ask of God
He won’t let me be indifferent to the wars
It is a big monster which treads hard
On the poor innocence of people
It is a big monster which treads hard
On the poor innocence of people
People…people, people
I only ask of God
He won’t let me be indifferent to the injustice
That they do not slap my other cheek
After a claw has scratched my whole body
I only ask of God
He won’t let me be indifferent to the wars
It is a big monster which treads hard
On the poor innocence of people
It is a big monster which treads hard
On the poor innocence of people
People…people…people
Solo le pido a Dios
Que la guerra no me sea indiferente
Es un monstruo grande y pisa fuerte
Toda la pobre inocencia de la gente
Es un monstruo grande y pisa fuerte
Toda la pobre inocencia de la gente
People…people…people
Oh yes, this is a classic in Spain that we still love 🙂 but specially popular when the dictatorship fell
Loved the video. Hadn’t seen this before, so I’m glad you shared it. I also agree that the video is much more effective than the lyrics. Not to say the lyrics alone aren’t effective — but like they say, a picture (or a video) is worth a 1000 words.
The lyrics are amazing. I do believe God is good and not indifferent to anything, which we shall see in his time.
This beautiful and very popular. I am happy to see you have it here. I haven’t read it in a while.
Beautiful! I hadn’t heard (or read) it before. Thank you for sharing it!!!

Hi Kaushik,
I just had to share it..it had moved me so much….that not sharing it would seem criminal to me….
What a gift! Thank you for sharing this! There are many “crimes” we humans can commit but I feel indifference is one of the most hideous. Great lyrics and a very talented group – new to me but will be in my favs now!
Many hugs,
suZen
HI Suzen,
I Am glad you liked it. The song is very powerful isnt it?
Hi Zeenat,
I have not heard this before…and the lyrics…even the thought of indifference…is a hard pill to swallow. And then I also wonder, have I been indifferent in my life? Honest answer: yes. I’ve been indifferent to the needs of others, while I’m safely tucked inside my car, I’ve been indifferent to suffering near to me…because I choose not to see it (yet, it’s still there), I’ve been indifferent to too much of the world around me…and this, today, is a stark reminder that I have a long ways to go, in showing compassion more deeply and in standing up for those who can’t themselves…
Hi Lance,
I know what you mean….its a very touching song…the reason it brought tears to my eyes was just that….have i been indifferent?? Sitting in my cushy life..what am i doing for the less fortunate? Somehow, this song has the effect of waking your sleeping or rather dormant humaneness. It is a real eye opener.
Thanks for stopping by Lance.
Zeenat, this is such a moving prayer and video. I, too, ask of God that He never allows me NOT to care tenderly for and about others.
