“There is more to life than increasing its speed.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Embracing the simple and slow moments is what a cozy life is all about. Shifting the mind into a lower gear can bring better health, inner calm, enhanced concentration and the ability to think more creatively.
In the last article we tried to understand the different kinds of REST and how it is so important for our mental, emotional and spiritual health. To take that energy a step further, lets now understand what it means to live a calm and cozy life.
Understanding a Cozy life
“Enjoying or affording warmth and ease; marked by or providing contentment or comfort,” is the definition of cozy according to Merriam-Webster.
There is a healing appeal to living a cozy life. Which I feel is the need of today for us all. The world usually promotes being productive and staying on top of the hustle culture. In the recent years side hustles are what people are infusing their energy into. There are a variety of self-help books/youtube channels/tiktoks on how to be successful or increase your income. The unfortunate gist of this trend is to keep up the hard work, stay in the rat race, keep on grinding, and eventually it will pay off. There’s one big component missing in this hustle culture though, and that is to truly love the life you live by taking time to slow down and enjoy the simple, cozy moments that bring you true happiness.
And lets be honest with ourselves, who is actually happy and healed constantly hustling and running in the rat race? I know I am not and could never be. It would actually stress me out to the max!
What is a Cozy life then?

“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” ~ Lao Tzu
Cozy and calm living is not about living your life in slow motion. It’s about doing everything at the right pace instead of rushing. By that same logic, cozy living is not about losing time by going slowly, it’s about gaining time by doing the things that are most important to you.
Include the cozy things that bring you joy in your daily life. This is one of the most important ways to make sure you have a cozy lifestyle. If you’re unsure what cozy moments bring you joy, then you will have to learn as you go. Take note of what things or experiences bring you a sense of comfort, calm and happiness, so you can be sure to include those in your routine.
The wonder of living a cozy life is that it doesn’t look the same for everyone, as everyone finds different things that can ignite that feeling. Variety is the spice of life, right? However, there are a few things that seem to be pretty staple across the board for the majority of people.
Here are a few ideas that can help you get started… After you add some of these ideas into your daily routine and your space, your days will be filled with little sprinkles of magic that may have gone unnoticed before.
- A Cozy Space
Be it your home or your bedroom, your living space, where you spend the most time, needs to be a cozy place of solace for you to retreat to. It’s a wonderful way for you get away from the noise of the outside world of life, work, or school. Basically, the moment you enter your cozy space you should be able to have a huge sigh of relief, and immediately feel a sense of comfort, ease and happiness. This sense of cozy can be attributed to the decor within your space. Add warm and neutral colors, plants, pillows, blankets, candles, crystals, incense and momentos that have personal meaning to you, such as photographs or artwork. Extra tip: Pinterest is a wonderful space to go look for cozy inspiration especially in terms of space decor. - Morning routines
Try to establish some morning routines to get you ready for the day ahead. Taking out the time to enjoy a slow and simple morning will make you feel ready to face the day and put you in a great mindset. Your morning routine can be as simple as waking up, getting ready, enjoying a cup of coffee, making breakfast, journaling, reading before you begin your workday. If that’s not your style, your morning routine may be waking up, doing yoga or meditation, getting ready, eating breakfast, and listening to your favorite podcast or playlist. Morning routines will look a bit different everyday and that is ok. Whatever your style of morning routine is, keep working on creating a cozy and calm energy in the morning, and see how it sets you up for the rest of the day. How you start your days can have more of an impact than you realize. - Night routines
Extra cozy elements can be incorporated into your routine as you wind down from a hard day. Usually at the end of the day you just want to relax. The week may feel difficult to get through. This is the best time to slow down. It is the best time to have your favorite meal, watch a movie or an episode of a TV show, go for a short walk and listen to a podcast. Also a good time to light some lavender scented candles and curl up with a good book, or take time to journal and reflect on your day or jot down all of your thoughts to clear your head. Establishing routines can help keep you calm during the craziness of the week.
In conclusion
Give your body and mind the rest and relaxation that it needs. Take time to look around you and take note of your beautiful surroundings. Slow down, enjoy each moment, embrace the simplicity of the good things in life, like the aroma of a freshly brewed cup of coffee, reading a good book and enjoying how the words envelope your thoughts in front of a crackling fire, wrapping up in a warm blanket to watch a movie. Life gets so busy and time passes so quickly. Just make sure that you’re being mindful with how you’re spending your time.
You truly notice the beauty of life when you slow down and embrace the simple and cozy moments that invoke joy and comfort.
Whether you live in the calm countryside or the city, there is so much daily magic can be found – you just have to stop, slow down, and look around.

I agree with this 100%. I have organized my life to be as calm as it can be most of the time and cozy with my cats. I live my routines, self-care, and alone time. While I do make exceptions, I priotize these things for my mental health. Too much diversion leaves me stressed.
Debbie, I love that you have your whole life organised around being cozy. How wonderful!
