“Put your thoughts to sleep. Do not let them cast a shadow over the moon of your heart. Let go of thinking.”~ Rumi
Do you find yourself in the overthinking mode sometimes?
Overthinking is when someone thinks about one thing again and again in a mind numbing loop.
When overwhelm kicks in, the mind automatically goes into overthinking mode. Our mind has a built in fight or flight mechanism to protect us from danger. So some level of thinking, problem solving mentally is a natural response. But when it takes over your life, and all waking moments are full of overwhelm, thats when we need to reevaluate what is normal.
It’s in this overwhelming mode, that very detrimental life decisions are made, because the mind is so tired of overthinking, it often settles on the wrong solution. This is the reason all decisions should be made with a calm mind, not an overthinking one.
Overthinking might be a result of underlying anxiety, which can trigger overthinking at any time, and this is often out of anyone’s control.
The trigger can’t be controlled, but the response certainly can.
Excessive overthinking can affect our levels of happiness, our relationships, and our entire lives.
Use this exercise to calm your mind anytime you start overthinking:

→ the “stop, breathe, reflect” technique to calm overthinking
1. STOP: When you notice yourself overthinking, pause whatever you’re doing. Give yourself permission to take a mental break. Acknowledge that you’re caught up in your thoughts and that they might be causing stress or anxiety.
2. BREATHE: Take a few slow, deep breaths. Focus on your breath as you inhale and exhale. Breathing deeply can activate your body’s relaxation response and help you feel more grounded.
3. REFLECT: With a calmer mind, gently explore your thoughts. Ask yourself questions like:
→ “what am i thinking about?”
→ “is this thought helping me or causing unnecessary stress?”
→ “is there evidence for or against this thought?”
→ “what’s the worst-case scenario? is it likely to happen?”
→ “what’s a more balanced or realistic way to look at this situation?”
By reflecting on your thoughts, you create distance from them. This distance can make it easier to see them objectively and recognize any patterns of negative or unhelpful thinking.
The goal of this technique is to develop a healthier relationship with your thoughts. Over time, this exercise can help you to become more mindful of your thinking patterns and make more balanced decisions.
Hope this helps to calm you 🩷

Great technique, Zeenat! I think we need to feel our emotions and analyze our unhelpful thoughts to truly undo them. Thanks for this mini-instruction.
