“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.”~ Vincent Van Gogh
When we think about changing our lives for the better, we often think of big lofty goals. Our list is big and the expectations we have of ourselves bigger.
So, we begin with the BIG changes we want to make in our lives, which is a good thing to reflect on from time to time. Then we go about trying to achieve that BIG change, with even bigger, more drastic steps. Only to fall flat on our face within 3 -5 days. Which means we can begin to change, but to stay the course consistently is the problem. And believe me, its a problem we all face.
To bring about BIG positive changes in my life, I realized I didn’t have to do anything big. In fact I had to make small shifts in my habits. As I kept incorporating these small shifts consistently and daily, I started to see BIG changes.
Example: I knew I needed to incorporate more activity in my day, to keep my body agile and symptoms of arthritis which were flaring up due to perimenopause at bay. But I just couldn’t get myself to stick to my long morning walks. I used to go for hour-long walks daily and that was my routine for so many years. But now I just couldn’t either wake up, or have the energy or have the time….I know the excuses were amazing!
So, frustrated with this I then decided to start walking for 10 minutes after every meal. See small shift in habit, but this made it doable. Now I swear by it and have added more 5 minute walks in the middle of all that just to keep me active all day. They accumulate to 10,000 steps a day and so easily too!
The thing with BIG habits is that they can feel too overwhelming too. If I start by telling myself I have to go for a walk and do 10,000 steps, I will stop before I even start 😉 But small steps consistently doesnt feel overwhelming.
10 Small Habits That Can Positively Change Your Life

Below is a list of small habits that can bring about massive positive changes in your mental and emotional health. I’ve slowly added them all to my life with AMAZING positive results. You can too ❤
1. Count your blessings daily. Find the optimal time in the day (mine is bedtime) and list all the things you love, like and appreciate about your life. I call this happy blessings.
2. Don’t take things personally. Just because things are said or done by others doesn’t mean it’s an accurate reflection of you. Only you know you. Learn when to absorb and when to release. What others do says everything about them — good and bad.
3. Not all friends are created equal. Spend the majority of your time with the friends who have earned their place on top. 80% of enjoyment/love comes from 20% of the people you know. Know who’s who.
4. Be evidence based. Make sure you see life and people as they are and not how you’d like them to be. Pay close attention to what’s playing out. Most of us could have saved ourselves YEARS of hanging out with unsuitables by applying this method.
5. Learn how to visualize. Hands down the most important skill you have as a human. The ability to use your inner screen to imagine and forecast what you want is a superpower — don’t use it to play worst case scenarios, play best case scenarios instead ❤
6. Learn how to single task. We do way too much — all at once. Single-tasking relates to having focused attention on what you’re doing in the present moment. It brings calm and precision.
7. Make your bed every morning. Being orderly from the get-go helps you feel accomplished and sets the tone for the rest of the day.
8. Prioritise taking care of yourself, always. Eat whole foods, drink water, exercise mindfully, rest, think kind thoughts. Treat yourself and your loved ones with love.
9. Check-in on your thoughts. Do you notice frequent anxiety, regret or self-doubt then take action (meditation, therapy, self-help books). Having a compassionate self-dialogue is essential for a peaceful life.
10. Learn where, what and with whom you feel happy and safe. This is your personal manual. In times of turbulence, you will always know what to return to.
