“Purpose is what gives life a meaning.” Charles H. Perkhurst
What is the purpose of life? What is the meaning of success and fulfillment? What do I really want? How many of us have come to the realization that twenty, thirty or forty years of our lives have flown by and we realize that we hardly recognize ourselves, any longer?
Such questions, perplexing to most, have been asked and answered over the ages. Discovering the true purpose and meaning of your life is truly simple.
I have often written about passion, finding your true self, loving yourself etc….but when it comes to the purpose of life, I have never really written about it in detail.
The reason for this is that I believe we each have a very simple purpose. One that need not be explained, cause we each already KNOW our purpose. But recently, after numerous emails from YOU the Beautiful readers, I will very simply explain to you , how to discover Your Unique life Purpose.
Each beings purpose can be as simple as-
- to be responsible
- to be useful
- to be honorable
- to be compassionate
- to matter
- to count for something
- to stand for something
- to make a difference
- to leave your mark
So much of what we do or decide to do with our life, our talents, our passions is based on these simple life purposes. These simple purposes are like broad strokes, full of color already present in the portrait that is YOU. You just have to fill in the details.
Discovering Your Life’s Unique Purpose can be a journey more wonderful than any you have ever taken before. Learning to live a purposeful life will fill you with the Joy of Life.
People today seem to be constantly searching for meaning in their lives; they look for meaning in endless consumerism, endless hours at their workplace, and endless streams of unsatisfying relationships.
The path to Discovering Your Unique Life Purpose is really very simple and can be mapped out in seven questions:
If you honestly answer these questions and honor the learning each one contains you will be much closer to living your life with Your unique Purpose, Passion and Absolute Joy.
Your Empowerment, Gratitude and Inspiration begins Now!
The following seven questions will assist you in discovering and articulating your purpose. Be as descriptive as you’d like. And the answer that makes your heart swell up, the point you feel so overwhelmed by what you are writing that you can’t stop crying, IS YOUR UNIQUE LIFE PURPOSE.
1. What do I most often give to others?
2. What do I have the most fun doing?
3. What do others look to me for?
4. What am I most often complimented on?
5. What do I do where I lose all track of time?
6. What do the people closest to me say my passions are?
7. What ideas, things, places and/or people am I most inspired by?
As an exercise in self-refinement and discovering your purpose, think about all your choices, your decisions, your passions, your desires, your relationships through the lens of these simple questions of purpose and see how clearly you will be able to see your own unique purpose.
The first set of points(each beings purpose…) + the answers to the seven questions, holds YOUR unique purpose.
But you already KNOW your purpose…You do! Just FEEL your purpose while you try answering these questions. And keep answering these questions everyday, till you are bursting with Life with Purpose with Passion.
Many of you might think you already Know your life’s purpose, which is awesome if its making you happy. But, answering these questions can still bring about beautiful revelations about your Self. Try it. Who knows, you might discover something new and exciting 🙂
“Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.” Rumi

Hi Z, I think it’s true that we do tend to think we need to be famous to succeed. Not everyone can be but we should all aim to live with integrity and honor ourselves and those around us. Thanks for the inspiration:) x A
Hi Ana,
I suppose we all live in this bubble of what our passion or purpose should look like, but in all honesty if we look deep within, we come to know its really something so simple.
I’m glad you liked this Ana. Thank you fro your lovely comment..and for also writing a superb post on passion.

THE LIFE-CHANGING QUESTION
My life’s unique purpose jumped out at me when I meditated on the single question…
What is life’s unique purpose in me?
This approach immediately disempowered the more me-centric, ego-driven ‘thinking’ and opened the door to the vast universal possibility that I was infact part of something much bigger and more beautiful than my limited thinking led me to believe.
Does that make sense to you?
Hi Robin,
Thank you for your kind words!
I love how when we meditate things just come into perspective 🙂
And it makes PERFECT sense……the “I” often misleads us into believing that our purpose is a materialistic one, when in all reality its simple yet, much much bigger than we can ever understand.
Thank you for your insightful comment here Robin.
Much Love~
Hi Z,
Thank you for sharing these thoughts! I *love* this: “you might discover something new and exciting”..
In my life, I am constantly evolving..so there is new and exciting consistently..I “think” I know myself then there is a surprise:)
So often, we think our purpose is complex..for me, it is as simple as opening my heart fully and sharing from this overflowing well..my roles might differ slightly as my life steps differ, but my purpose remains the same..
The moments that I embrace my purpose are ones of abundant ease, joy, delight..the ones that I avoid, bury, deflect my purpose are ones of struggle, discouragement, doubt..I choose love, ease, joy, delight!
My butterflies and glitter, choose simplicity..sister..I love you dearly..I appreciate you and all that you share..thank you for knowing your purpose and investing energy through it!
Darling Joy,
You make me blush with all your kind words..:)
And you know while I wrote this line “you might discover something new and exciting”..i actually thought about you and how much you would love it. Cause you really do stand for all things new and exciting 🙂
I’m so glad you have found your purpose and that you too share from that loving place.
Thank you fro your amazing comment here. I love you dearly too my darling sister.
Hugs~
Dear Zeenat,
I read your posts often but have commented only a couple of times. And today’s topic and your as usual beautiful thoughts, makes me share mine too.
Those 9 simple truths that we all share in one way or the other – to be useful, to leave a mark, to make a difference, to stand for something – have the key to reveal the purpose of our lives.
And those 7 questions helps fine tune our thoughts.
Thank you for sharing these. You have expressed and articulated in the most simple and meaningful and practical way.
I have have figured that my purpose of life becomes clearer to me with every ongoing experience. I get clarity in the most mundane of moments and tasks. But, I have to add that ever since I have become a mother to a beautiful little girl, I have come to know and understand myself and my life much better. In fact, I have shared my introspection in my recent Life Lessons post.
Thanks again, Zeenat for this valuable read. 🙂 You are a beautiful soul. That, I have known already from your posts and your thoughts on blogs like Prolific Living, that I too follow! 🙂
HI Rashmie,
You comment just made my day 🙂 Thank you for all your kind and loving words. I am so glad you have figured out your unique life purpose! But you are right…it becomes more and more apparent as time goes by. Infact so apparent that we can no longer ignore it.
Glad you liked this article and all the others. i do love seeing your comment here.
So Much Love~
The Dalai Lam said that the purpose of life is to be happy. Perhaps that is the end result of considering your excellent questions!
HI Galen,
WOW…that really simplified it hmm…!
I agree the end result has got to be happiness….but getting there, is usually the confusing part for some.
Thank you fro sharing you wonderful wisdom here.
Much Love~
Oops–make that the Dalai Lama!
Galen…I love seeing your gravatar and your name here twice 🙂 Twice the love ! So I aint changing it and leaving it just as your beautiful self left it 🙂
Zeenat, may I firstly say what a thrill it was to see you again over at my humble page.
And to come here and read this — sheer heaven!!!
And I just KNEW you would have a cheery new graphic here. Thanks for all the love, sunshine and flowers.
Yes, I believe I haved graced upon my life’s mission of spreading joy through songs. So, thanks for the inspiration and look for me to post a new singing video, guitar too, on a song I’ve written called “Sail A Child.”
I like that I can weave in ALL of these in sharing a song…
to be responsible (share my talent)
to be useful (make someone smile, feel better.)
to be honorable (share GOOD things, hope and gratitude.)
to be compassionate (realize that others are perhaps going through tough things in life.)
to matter (I think I do!! We all do, really.)
to count for something (I hope so!)
to stand for something (Love. Lightness. Laughter.)
to make a difference (well, yeah!)
to leave your mark (yes! I hope?)
This also applies to being a good human being in all dealings!
“Integrity. Balance. Joy.”
xoxo

HI T!

And am glad you liked the introspective questions. Do answer them and see what you come up with.
Still waiting for thy call… 🙂
Lots of love~
Hi Zeenat .. you’ve certainly opened everyone’s eyes with your wonderful post .. too true our meaning of life is to be happy, to be satisfied with ourselves and life in general, to be an example for others to follow … spreading the positive .. thank you – what I needed today .. cheers Hilary
Zeenat – it is sooooo good to see you talking about and exploring one of life’s most perplexing questions – what is the purpose indeed?
The best part was your ending – yes! we do know our purpose. So many of us continue to walk around in confusion, but the purpose is with us and within us always. May we have the courage to face it, may we find the strength to be honest with ourselves and live from the deepest alignment of our mind-body-soul.
Thank you dear one, for such a wise and beautifully written piece!
Would that I had read this a couple of years ago! However, I found as I was reading this post and reflecting on it, that if I had focused on your questions then, they’d have kept me thinking backwards–and, subsequently, I’d not have followed the signs that sent me in the direction that’s led me to where I am.
I certainly had *no* idea what my purpose was but I kept asking loudly and could “hear” the Universe talking to me but it was not in my language! Blessedly, I shut up long enough to ‘get it’! Funny that once I did, the purpose became the passion. Nifty how it works out that way!
Thanks for your posts. I really enjoy them!
Dearest Zeenat,
What an exquisite experience…your energy shines through in all that you do.
Here’s how I received my BGO (blinding glimpse of the obvious)…I was laying in a hospital bed, completely paralyzed and I heard a voice say, “Did you do what you came here to do?”
I felt an arrow pierce through the many layers of protection I had placed around my heart.
As each layer dissolved, one after another…I felt the light of my soul shine through. And I made a promise…
…to fulfill my life purpose.
May you be blessed with all that is wonderful in this world.
