9 Spiritual Life Lessons and Quotes from Gandhi

“You must be the Change you want to see in the world.” ~ Gandhi

Today marks the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. It’s the day a simple man, with a simple mission took physical form in this world. His mission was of Non-violence, of peace, of Unity in diversity. His utter simplicity brought about a revolution of magnanimous proportions. A country was freed, people were heard, caste systems were banished and most of all love and peace prevailed. On this day…and everyday, I applaud this mission. I applaud his spirit, his courage, his unwavering and self-less motives.

I believe, rather firmly believe in Non-violence in thoughts and actions. In no circumstance or situation or state is violence physical or mental acceptable. I condemn war and fighting. There is so much of it going on around us already, that we are just adding to the Universe’s Mental Pollution, by thinking violently too. Be it just muttering harsh words under our breath or holding grudges or holding hate in our hearts. We are sending out the wrong energy into this Universe.

As Gandhi said, “You Must be the Change you want to see in the world”.

Are we truly?

We constantly complain and bicker of failing systems around us…when in all reality, the fact that we are muttering, bickering and thinking such negativity is a failure of our own Human(e)ity as well as an addition to the Negative Mental Pollution.

There are many personalities in history that have left their mark. But, Gandhiji left his mark not only in history, but in our hearts. To say I find immense wisdom in his words, would be an understatement. I think he was truly very in-tune with his spiritual self.

Gandhiji used to begin his public meetings with a new common prayer, “Iswar Allah terey naam”. Which roughly means ‘God and Allah are your names’. This one sentence proves of Gandhiji’s inclusive spirit, and further fortifies his belief of “we are all one”.

As a Tribute to this beautiful Spirit, I share with you some of my favorite Spiritual Life Lessons from Gandhiji. May you see the wisdom in them too –

9 Spiritual Life Lessons and Quotes from Gandhi

1} Revenge and violence are never productive nor healing. Forgiveness is the one way to heal yourself and the world.

“An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

2} When your mind, heart and soul are in harmony, that is a surefire way to happiness.

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

3} When you feel like your purpose in this world seems unclear, immerse yourself in serving others. You will find yourself and your purpose in acts of pure selflessness.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

4} An indomitable will in your purpose and goal is where your true strength is.

“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

5} When you consciously think positively everything in your life follows suit. You are the product of every thought your mind focuses on.

“A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

6} Make everyday you have count for something. Make it special. Live & Learn like your life depends on it. Learning is a life long process.

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

7} No matter how small or big, take up a cause and give it your all. There is no better way to leave your mark in the world than with the good you did.

“A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

8} Make every heart and every soul you encounter happy. Show other grieving souls kindness and love so that they too may happily live.

“To give pleasure to a single heart by a single act is better than a thousand heads bowing in prayer.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

9} To make great changes in the world and in yourself, you don’t need to push too hard. Real and lasting change comes gently. This gentle way has the power to make the right changes within us and outside of us.

“In a gentle way, you can shake the world.”~ Mahatma Gandhi

Some more Wise Words from Gandhi:

On Love:

“Whether humanity will consciously follow the law of love, I do not know. But that need not disturb me. The law will work just as the law of gravitation works, whether we accept it or not. The person who discovered the law of love was a far greater scientist than any of our modern scientists. Only our explorations have not gone far enough and so it is not possible for everyone to see all its workings.”

On Non-Violence:

“Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being.”

“However much I may sympathize with and admire worthy motives, I am an uncompromising opponent of violent methods even to serve the noblest of causes.”

On Forgiveness:

“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”

“To forgive is not to forget. The merit lies in loving in spite of the vivid knowledge that the one that must be loved is not a friend.”

On Acceptance & Religion:

“Like the bee gathering honey from the different flowers, the wise person accepts the essence of the different scriptures and sees only the good in all religions.”

I could write endlessly about this amazing man, but somehow I feel, you already know how wise he was.

Just think, if a simple man can bring about a non-violent, peaceful revolution and free a country with his sheer will and pure heart….How much can you do?

The possibilities, are indeed endless. You just need to believe in YOU!

  1. Thanks Zeenat for your thoughts on Gandhiji. His unique feat of liberating India and its millions of people from long hegemony of the British Empire without raising an army, without firing a gun or taking a hostage, and without ever holding a political office intrigued Albert Einstein. Einstein effused in awe, “Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth”. The sad reflection of our times is that icons, together with their ideals, are getting occluded, reducing them to mere ritualistic presence in the background. There is no love. Beastly elements are strutting around and holding sway, offering dollops of dogma, spewing the venom of hatred and bigotry. Indeed, we all need to be more and more steadfast in being the change we want to see in the world.

  2. Such great wisdom here. We can learn a lot and find much peace in his teachings which are more needed today than ever. My favorite, of course, is:

“A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

How beautiful Zeenat. A taste of what we need more of in these challenging times. So many uplifting and spiritual words – many of which I try to practice in my life. This one is my quote of the day: When you consciously think positively everything in your life follows suit. You are the product of every thought your mind focuses on.
